こんな特徴

熱帯アメリカが原産で本来は多年草ですが、寒さに弱いため、日本などでは一年草扱いになります。「Moon flower」という英名がつけられているように、暗くなってから大きく白いラッパ型の花を咲かせます。また、よい香りがすることも特徴で、蛾の仲間を誘います。

しばしばヨルガオを「ユウガオ」として称されますが、『源氏物語』のユウガオをはじめ、ウリ科のヒョウタン類の花を指し、別の種類です。

管理

鉢植えやプランターは土の表面が乾いたら水やりをします。地植えは自然の降雨のみで基本大丈夫です。ヨルガオは、暗い夜に花を咲かせる植物のため、近くに明かりがあると花は咲きません。昼間は、しおれていますが、日の当たる場所に置きます。

Moon flower（Ipomoea alba）

It is native to tropical America and is originally a perennial plant, but because it is vulnerable to the cold, it is treated as an annual plant in Japan and elsewhere. As the English name “Moon flower” is given, large white trumpet-shaped flowers bloom after dark. It also has a nice scent and invites moth friends.

Often referred to as “Yugao”, it refers to the flowers of the Cucurbitaceae gourds, including the Yugao in “Genji Monogatari”, which is a different species.

Potted plants and planters are watered when the soil surface is dry. Ground planting is basically okay with only natural rainfall. Since morning-glory is a plant that blooms on dark nights, it will not bloom if there is a light nearby. It is wilted during the day, but it should be placed in a sunny place.
