インド原産の非耐寒性常緑低木です。冬から春に、苞に包まれた青紫色（瑠璃色）の美しい花をを多数咲かせます。植物園の温室内など見ることが一般的です。寒さには弱いため、沖縄など暖かい地域以外は、鉢植えでの管理します。

管理

日当たりが良く、水はけのよい肥沃な用土を好みます。夏の直射日光は葉焼けをおこすことがあるので、鉢植えは半日陰に移動させます。高温多湿を好みます。夏場の水やりは頻繁に行ってください。アブラムシやハダニ、カイガラムシなどが発生すことがあります。
