こんな特徴の花です

ジニアとは別名、百日草（ヒャクニチソウ）と呼ばれる一年草です。真夏から秋の頃まで長期間咲き続け、開花期間が長いことにちなんで名付けられました。「長命の花」という意味の浦島草の名もあります。花色は白を除けば派手でビビットな色合いをしています。青以外のほとんどの花色があります。

咲き方も様々で、豪華な大輪から素朴な小輪まであり、一重や八重の花を咲かせバリエーション豊かです。花壇や鉢植え、寄せ植えにも向いています。種類がいくつかあります。交雑品種の「プロフュージョン」がよく出回っています。分枝して、たくさんの花を咲かせます。

切花向きで高性種の「エレガンス」、花つきや分枝性に優れ、葉は細めな「リネアリス系」、主にタネから育て蛇の目模様の花を咲かせる「メキシコヒャクニチソウ」など。

開花は遅めですが降霜あたりまで咲き続けます。いずれの種類も暑さに強く、他の花が元気のない高温乾燥期でも花をよく咲かせてくれます。

管理

春に市販される花付きの苗を購入して植えます。タネを直まきにする品種もあります。直射日光に十分に当て、花がらをこまめに摘み取ります。

Flowering is late, but it continues to bloom until around frost. Both types are resistant to heat and bloom well even during the hot and dry season when other flowers are not healthy.
