キク科コスモス属の一年草です。色は、花の名前に使われている黄色でしたが、赤やオレンジなど数品種あります。花期が長く6月頃から見られ、真夏の暑さにも負けずに咲き続けます。秋になると花色がより鮮やかに咲きます。秋咲きのコスモスとは異なる植物で、花色も違います。広く園芸品種として栽培されていますが、一部は野生化して自生し、たまに道端などで見ることもあります。

原産地はメキシコで、標高1600m以下の地域に自生します。18世紀末にスペイン・マドリードの植物園に送られ、ヨーロッパに渡来したといわれています。日本には大正時代の初めに輸入された記録が残っています。

秋咲きのコスモスとは違う

秋咲きのコスモスは、赤、白、ピンク、の花色が多く、和名をオオハルシャギク(学名：Cosmos bipinnatus）といいます。

キク科 / コスモス属と同じ仲間ですが、別の種類の花です。互いを交配する事は出来ません。

「黄色のコスモス」がありますが、キバナコスモスではありません。

チョコレートコスモス

チョコレートを思わせる香りと色をもつ「チョコレートコスモス」キク科 / コスモス属(Cosmos atrosanguineus）

同じメキシコ原産で、原種のチョコレートコスモスは野生では絶滅したとされています。原種のチョコレートコスモス、その交配種ともにタネがとれないので、さし芽や分球でふやした株で育てます。現在、販売されているチョコレートコスモスは原種チョコレートコスモスとキバナコスモスの交雑種などです。

管理

日当たりと水はけのよい場所で育てます。5月～梅雨入りの頃にタネを直まきします。

The place of origin is Mexico, which grows naturally in areas below 1600 m above sea level. It is said that it was sent to the botanical garden in Madrid, Spain at the end of the 18th century and came to Europe. There are records of imports in Japan at the beginning of the Taisho era.

Autumn-blooming cosmos is called (scientific name: Cosmos bipinnatus).

It is the same family as Asteraceae / Cosmos, but a different kind of flower. You cannot mate with each other.

There is a “yellow cosmos”, but it is not a kibana cosmos.
