ヒオウギは山野の草地や海岸に自生する多年草です。葉は長く扇状に広がり、宮廷人が持つ檜扇に似ていることから命名されたとされます。別名を烏扇（からすおうぎ）といいます。花は8月ごろ咲き、直径5～6ｃｍ程度。花色はオレンジ色で赤い斑点があり放射状に開きます。

午前中に咲き夕方にはしぼむ1日花であるため、わかりやすいです。

種は黒く艶がある。

矮性で葉幅の広いダルマヒオウギがよく出回ります。黄花種などの改良品種の他、花色が豊富なアイリスとの交雑種の「キャンディリリー」などももあります。

春か秋に苗を、日当たりと水はけのよい場所に植えます。とても丈夫な花なので育てやすいです。3～4年に1回株分けをして植え替えます。
