原産地は北半球の温帯な地域。種類は世界で100種類ほどがあります。ノコギリの歯をつけた茎の先に、小さな花が集まって咲きます。多く栽培されるのは、花色が豊富な西洋ノコギリソウです。ハーブや薬草として使われる種もあり、セイヨウノコギリソウ（A. millefolium）はハーブとして使われる植物です。止血作用、健胃作用など薬効の高いハーブとしても知られます。
アキレアの根から出る分泌液は、近くに生えている植物の病気を治し、害虫から守る効果があります。テントウムシなどの益虫を呼び寄せる効果があるといわれ、コンパニオンプランツとしてもよく利用されています。
管 理
日当たりと水はけのよい場所で、肥料を控えめにして育てます。3～4年に1回、株分けして植え替えます。
