ヨーロッパ原産で元々雑草だったが、園芸用に改良された。以前はヤグルマソウと呼ばれたこともあった。山野に自生するユキノシタ科の「矢車草」と区別するため「矢車菊」の名称に。
全体が白色の綿毛にに覆われ初心者でも育てやすく花壇や切り花に向いています。一重咲きや八重咲きの品種があり花色が豊富で特に青花が美しく、濃紫色の品種も人気があります。
管 理
秋に日当たりと水はけのよい場所に直まきします。ポットに蒔いた時は本葉4～5枚で根鉢を崩さずに定植します。
Centaurea cyanus
Originally a weed native to Europe, it has been improved for horticulture. It used to be called Yagurumasou. The name “Yaguriku” is used to distinguish it from the “Yagurakusa” of the Saxifragaceae family that grows naturally in the mountains.
The whole is covered with white fluff, making it easy for beginners to grow and suitable for flower beds and cut flowers. There are single-flowered and double-flowered varieties with abundant flower colors, especially blue flowers, and dark purple varieties are also popular.
