ベトナム北部原産でツバキ科ツバキ属の常緑低木。亜熱帯の樹林下に生えるツバキの仲間。寒さに比較的弱い。花はピンク色で肉厚、6弁以上で半八重に見えます。葉も楕円形で大きい。ベトナムではテト（旧正月）を祝う花として知られ、幻の名花と呼ばれています。ベトナムのグエン王朝では門外不出とされた特別な花。1994年に日本の学術調査隊が再発見した。
和名の海棠は美人の形容に使われる言葉。

管理

水はけのよい土に植え、日当たりのよい場所で栽培する。開花期は11～4月。接ぎ木された苗が出回るので、ツバキ同様の育て方をします。寒さに比較的弱く、安全な最低越冬温度は5℃前後。0℃前後にも耐えるが、蕾は傷みます。
